The alleged killing of Anambra State-born philanthropist and businessman, Lucky Adimike, has taken a dramatic turn following the arraignment of three suspects before a court in Abuja.
Adimike was reportedly killed at his mansion in Guzape, Abuja, in circumstances that have continued to attract public attention.
Those facing charges over the alleged killing are identified as his children, Adimike Odirachukwu Anthony and his sister, Adimike Chinyere Stephany, alongside Comfort Ajibade, who is alleged to be Stephany’s partner.
According to the allegations presented by the police, the three suspects allegedly conspired to kill Adimike.
The prosecution’s case has generated particular interest because two of the accused persons are reportedly the deceased’s children.
The suspects were arraigned in Abuja and subsequently remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre pending further proceedings scheduled for September.
The police investigation reportedly alleges that the accused persons worked together in the circumstances surrounding Adimike’s death.
The motive behind the alleged killing remains a matter for the court to determine as the case proceeds.
The prosecution is expected to present evidence to establish its allegations, while the accused persons will have the opportunity to defend themselves against the charges.
In addition to the murder-related allegations, the suspects are reportedly facing charges relating to alleged same-sex relationships.
Police allegations concerning the relationships have also become part of the court proceedings, although the defendants remain presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a competent court.
Nigeria’s Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act criminalises same-sex marriage and certain related activities.
The case has also generated public discussion over the reported position of the deceased’s wife and mother of the two siblings.
She has reportedly spoken publicly in defence of her children and challenged aspects of the allegations surrounding the death of her husband.
Her position has added another dimension to a case already attracting significant attention.
As proceedings continue, the court will ultimately determine whether the prosecution’s allegations against the three defendants are supported by admissible evidence.
The suspects remain entitled to the presumption of innocence until the court reaches a final determination.
